This was another of those "I almost didn't answer" questions, because I hadn't used FMTDTA in so long. As I understand it, OPNQRYF uses a subset of SQL commands. Since the advent of V3, SQL performance is GREATLY increased (until you reach 200K records or so) on the AS/400. I would certainly be interested in any RECENT performance comparisons as well...
