I have used the VisualAge tools and used the VA-RPG tool for some minor 
things. I found it fun and useful. For RPG guys, it is not that difficult 
to pick up the few new opcodes. 

At this point in time, though, I would recommend looking into VA for Java 
and the AS/400 toolbox. Betas for both are out, and IBM has clearly 
stated that this is the future direction for programming on the AS/400.
