Doug,

    The 4317's are inexpensive versus a HP5si.  They are also slower and
the toner capacity is slightly less, but toner costs about the same.  I
have both the 4317's and the HP5si MX's here.  I have less problems out
of the HP5si MX printers.  Just my experiences....

    If you are opting for two printers, one for the network and one for
the AS/400 then get two but....  I would recommend setting both up as an
AS/400 and a network printer.  Then again, would that be feasable for
10-20 people?  If there were 20 people, I would shot for the dual
printers.  The cost savings over a 3812 is probably enough to justify
both printers!  Here's what I've got:

    My accounting department is in a small building and is setup just
like what you mentioned.  Everyone is on the network but not everyone is
on the AS/400.  Most of the print load comes from the AS/400.  We have
two IBM 4317's sitting side-by-side in the hallway with the copier and
fax.  Both printers are twinax connected to the AS/400 and come standard
with a parallel port.  We connect them to the network using an Intel
Netport PRO which allows print serving for one serial and two parallel
devices.  I have the same exact setup for our Customer Service and
Accounts Receivable group which is in another building.  I have mine
broken up by group versus AS/400 and Network usage.  Everyone knows how
to move AS/400 reports between the printers.  It also provides a nice
reassurance of redundancy!!!  Example:  I had a port go out on me
Tuesday afternoon which affected my Customer Service group (they print
ALOT).  I do not keep both printers in that area on the same port for
just such a reason, so everyone automatically started moving their
reports over to the other printer.  A bit inconvienent but better than
not having anything at all.
