before or after you open the cursor, you can get a record count this
way:
select count(*)
into :reccntvar
from file
where fld1 = :variable1
and fld2 = :variable2
If the file (and associated overrides) are the same, it will give you
what you want. This "select/count" runs independently of the
declare/select/open.
