As a benchmark, we're up 24x7 all year. We've only been down during the
day about 2 times in the past year. And that was 2 times too many!

One time we had a problem with APPN losing track of our other systems; we
couldn't pass through to the other systems, and response time kept getting
worse and worse. We -had- to IPL during the day (with all the cancelled
jobs &c that meant).

We have RAID 5 drives to prevent disk problems; we have swapped several
drives during the day, transparently to the users (except for bad response
time).

We've been -very- fortunate that most of our problems happen overnight, so
the only people affected are some of the mfg plants that use the system
overnight, and our UK operation (5 hours ahead of us). The only impact on
users is batch reports getting out late.

We're working towards using Mimix/Switch to allow us to use our 2nd
in-house computer as a backup, which should only take an hour or so to
switch to in case of a problem with our primary machine.
