I second the thought... with a few caveats... 1. Keep in mind that Linux (or any Unix variant) is NOT an AS/400... it has no particular interest in keeping your system running... if you execute the wrong command, it won't warn you... it will simply do it. Trust me... when you've run "MKFS" as many times as I have (and a few times on the wrong device) you remember to double, tripple, and quadruple check your typing. 2. LINUX is freeware... and you get the support that you pay for. If you are expecting the same kind of tech support as you get for the AS/400, go with a commercial Unix (SCO, Unixware, NetBSD, etc). david At 10:10 PM 1/12/98 -1000, Steve Glanstein wrote: >Hey folks: > >This is an excellent decision....Only a couple of other suggestions: Make >sure that you are up to date with the latest LINUX fixes and take it real >slow when it comes to the configuration of LINUX, the daemons running, and >users with actual access to the box. > >Steve Glanstein > > > >>Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 09:39:34 -0600 >>From: "Jack Mullins" <jmullins@ipa.net> >>Subject: Re: Internt Security & the AS/400 > >>I have decided to take it slow and make sure that everything is secure >>before putting the AS/400 online.
