Amazingly enough, I worked at a shop a couple of years back (non profit health
care management) that still used these techniques. IBM nearly choked when they
bought a new AS400 and wanted to load it up with six 8MM and two 1/2" tape
drives so that they could process _four_jobs_ at the same time. Tape to tape
operations to merge transactions into the "database". Stat reporting often took
as long as five or six hours to just read through a tape. YUK!
Just goes to show how resistant to change some folks are.
Just a junior (pseudo) geezer... ;)

Ah! Matching Record Logic... Imagine it's just a Big Merge of records
into the selected key sequence.

And the H1-H9 indicators. Useful as traps in your logic when you're too
lazy to code the necessary trap. Simply insert a Halt Indicator and have
your program come to a screeching halt when something (like a disk read or
write) fails to complete properly.
