When I quit school and came to work at IBM, I too was
rather impressed with the capabilities of the S/38.

But, there's a big difference between "object based"
and "object oriented".  It's very difficult to do OO
design using tools that do not support OO programming.
I've stated my opinion before that you can't get the
full benefits of OO unless you're using a true OO
language like Java or Smalltalk. (IMHO, hybrids like
C++ cause more problems than they're worth.)
