Eric,
Admitting my ignorance in front of God and everybody, would you mind
showing me a short example of the physical file DDS with packed decimal
and then the LF DDS with those fields redefined as zoned decimal?
I guess I should be admitting my laziness as well, but I would
appreciate the help.

Converting packed numeric fields is a breeze if you create LF DDS and
redefine
the packed fields to zoned (dtatype 'S'). OS400 will convert the packed
fields
dynamically as it reads the PF. I haven't tried it, but I would think
that
this
will work for FTP as well as it does for CA file transfer.

If the physical file does not have packed numeric fields you can use FTP
directly. It can convert the EBCDIC data to ASCII. Also, sometimes it is
easy to write an RPG or Cobol program to do the unpacking and formatting
for you. If you are interested in a commercial product we've just
released an application that can convert a file to Excel CSV or fixed
ASCII format. After the conversion you can use FTP to send to a user's
PC. You can see more about this at:

Hope this helps!
