Rob,
 Would you elaborate on some of the alternatives. Perhaps even to the   
extent of some sample code. So far the prospects are bleak, to say the   
least. However, I am certainly getting responses. That is the tremendous   
value of this mailing list...somewhere out there, several people have   
been there, done that, and worn out the T-shirt.
 While here, I would like to thank everyone for their responses. Just   
because I don't like the answer, doesn't mean that it's not the right   
one. But I am still looking for that silver bullet. I do promise, tho,   
not to take up too much of your valuable time.

I like Larry Bolhuis answer with the object lock on the data area.  But   
if
for some reason, (perhaps you are forbidden to modify vendor code), you   
chose
not to implement this situation there are alternatives.  They require
extensive programming and involve the use of work management job API's   
and the like.
