Al & David,

I wonder if retrieving the QSYS SYSLVL works by accident?  In which 
case, it would probably be dangerous to use in a product install.

What API do you use to get the release?  I looked in the V3R1 API Ref 
manual but did not see anything.

Well, I agree (from trial and error) that you are correct.  However 
this is
not what I would have predicted.

Clearly when you install a new release, individual objects are 
restored
into QSYS.  The library is neither deleted nor cleared.  You can prove 
this
to your self by creating a rogue object in QSYS (e.g.: something that 
you
are not supposed to create like a program or an data area), it will 
survive
a release upgrade.  (Valid user objects to create in QSYS include
libraries, user profiles, configuration libraries, authorization 
lists,
etc.)  Never the less your solution seems to be correct.

I normally use the API (a pain in the ass to code, but I always clone 
the
code), or else I create a trivial object in QTEMP, and get back it's
creation level.
