The usual answer - it depends ! If it just happens to be a 1/2" reel then it's probably a fairly easy task. If it's a QIC or 8mm cartridge it's probably time to hire a few hundred part timers to start re-entering the data ! :-( (From the mention of the "little red tab" I would surmise this was an 8mm cartridge ?). Still, depending on what it's worth to you there are companies that specialise in data recovery that may be able to get the information back for you. A quick web search reveals the following links: http://www.exabyte.com/suppserv/techsupp/recovery/in0230.html (The above sounds like a good deal if you have data written by an Exabyte 8mm tape drive, and that is ANY AS/400 8mm tape, although their free offer only apply to damage from bad tapes or drive malfunction, and not to tape initialisation) http://www.datarec.com/ http://www.ontrack.com/ http://www.excaliburdr.com/ or look for further links from http://www.wdc.com/support/FAQ/recovery.html It appears however that most of these specialise in recovery of PC/Unix data.
