John,

We wrote software for Williams-Sonoma that interfaces with the Visa VAP
for real-time authorization, and have done it for other customers, too.
There is also a vendor (Christopher & Associates ?) who support dial
connections to Visa. The VAP interface is provided by Visa for customers
with higher volume requirements. It's been working well, they process
all of their mail order transactions through it. You can do settlement
that way, too, but your bank may have another way to handle settlements.

Visa will also authorize your MasterCard, American Express, and other
credit card transactions.
