Rob,

> What kind of hardware switch are you referring to?

We utilize the prodcuts from none other than Black Box. The base unit is a
rack mount 19" cabinet
with a power supply and a master controller. To this connects an external box
with a serial port
what has a modem on it for connection to a remote computer. The rack contains
blades (BNC, Twinax,
RJ45, V.24, V.35 - You Pick). Eack blade has three ports, common, system A and
system B. The
devices (modems, controllers, whatever) connect to Common, you guess the
others! Normally all users
are routed to system A. When the 'switch' is thrown (while there is a physical
switch it is done
logically by the backup system since the primary is likely out of commision)
they connect to system
B. You can gang the switches and add as many cards as you like. Basically you
need one blade for
each device (or line) you want to switch. Each blade can be switched manually
for testing.
