Jim, Point taken! Still questioning if it is simply due to the
overflow problem or is it (which I surmise from what you said) an
arithmetic problem! Being a COBOL reptile, I am accustomed to "Data
Structures" and simply move this from here to there and btw rearrange
it, It would not cross my mind to multiply to rearrange, that is,
until now! :-)

     Howard:  As stated in other responses, the fastest operation a 
     computer can do is a memory move.  Invoking any arithmetic
operation 
     for somthing this simple is not a reasonable way to code.  Save
the 
     CPU cycles and code with three/four moves instead

This is an ignorant question because it has been a long time since I 
have used any RPG. 
     
I understand the overflow processing delay but I am curious about 
defining the result field large enough to prevent that from happening,

and using the MOVEL or MOVER or whatever to get the result where you 
need it? Does doing  that result in an incorrect result? If not, would

you still take a performance hit? or is this a useable solution?
     
Or do these commands even still exist? :-)
