Hi Jerry! As I'm sure you know the Telnet protocol does not provide for encrypted and authenticated connections. But as you noted there are ways to do it. You can use an NT server on both sides and use PPTP. Or use a firewall on both sides and use the VPN capability of the firewall. Most now support the IPSec standard, but interoperability is sometimes difficult. One solution that I like a lot is the Shiva VPN Gateway. The remote PCs use Shiva VPN Client and the session is encrypted. The Gateway can also be used in a LAN environment.
