Walden,
  Is dbfld1 referenced anywhere else in your code, or just on the %size()? 
I think that the compiler doesn't include a token for "unused" fields.  Try 
a bogus Eval dbfld1=dbfld1 to make the field "used."  Maybe that's why 
putting it explicitly in a DS works...
