Would that have addressed his concerns? Whould this have determined why the
indicator
came on, even though there was not a duplicate record? I see that you've left
off the
indicator on your write.
Perhaps it might be better to do the following:
D filestatus 5P 0
C write(e) filename
C If %error
C eval filestatus=%status
C 'File status='dsply filestatus
C EndIf
After some experience you could then determine the cause of the error by the
code.

Why don't you chain to file first before write and then if the indicator is
on the record does not exist so you can write to it.
