Re: PC dial up connection to AS400

The old way would be to use a protocol converter or Ascii Workstation
Controller (AWC-really a protocol converter inside the AS400) and then an
emulator.  Other choices would be direct PPP to AS/400, NT running a
firewall to the AS/400, NT/RAS dialup to the AS/400, or direct Async dialup
with Synapse RemoteAPPC.

With the advent of RICS AS/400's with all PCI slots (no SDM) the AWC is not
an option.

I recommend you take a look at the Synapse RemoteAPPC product which is
software only running in a PC that can be attached to your AS400 any
physical way (in your case ethernet).  The client software is their WinAPPC
for display, printer, and/or file transfer.  It turns the attached PC into
an async comm server with speeds up to 115K per port (just com1 and com2 or
install RocketPorts for up to 16 simultaneous dialups).  PC's like doing
Async stuff.  Here's their blurb on it:

RemoteAPPC:  Fast (up to 115kb), secure async dialup communication to the
AS/400.  Supports up to 16 concurrent WinAPPC client connections for full
featured Windows based display/printer emulation and file transfer.
Includes firewall security, dialback, callerID, and user scheduling. Works
with any version of Windows (3.11, 95, 98, NT, and 2000).

Synapse AS400 RemoteAPPC was recognized at the SF COMMON Showcase Product
Excellence Awards (Midrange Computing) as having the BEST remote control
product.
