The "global economy" occurred long after Corporate America decided to toss
people out on their keisters for no reason other than in the holy name of
"downsizing". If you were unfortunate enough to be around back at the start
of Lou G's tenure at IBM (hard to believe that this stuff is now ancient
history to most folks), all of IBM's _GOOD_ people "took the money and ran"
when offered the buyout and IBM let them go. People "worth their salt" left
IBM and used the buyout money to fund startup companies. People (for the most
part) not worth having stuck with IBM and we had to put up with their
incompetent advice for years to come.

Believe it or not, I sought a "corporate home" for years before deciding that
such a thing no longer existed. Information Systems in particular offers no
long term employment, especially if you're in IT management. In most IT
environments, the "rank and file" cannot coexist with the "status quo",
because those seeking challenge will not find it in most IT shops today. Yet
management continues to wonder why "retention" is a big issue...
