You should probably check out the WSG (Workstation Gateway). It converts 5250 data streams to HTML on the fly and you use your browser. In my opinion, while it works, it would be very unproductive. If you are looking for pizzazz for the users, they will think you have something special, until they have to use it. If you aren't willing to rewrite your apps as client server (and even then I don't they have the efficiency of a green screen), the interface is clunky.
