IP address field is there in case you do not have a DNS. If you have DNS, ignore it - it is not used. IP address will be always resolved from DNS. BTW, I always thought that favourite choice for intranets is 192.x.x.x :-) Best regards Alexei Pytel Chris Bipes <ChrisB@cross-check.com> on 06/17/99 09:22:34 AM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com To: "'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com'" <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> cc: (bcc: Alexei Pytel/Rochester/IBM) Subject: RE: Client Access Question I would like to know how to set up client access using the system name and resolving to the IP address. After I enter the system name I am prompted for the TCP/IP address. This is actually prefilled for me if the system name is in my local hosts file and blank if not. Does this mean changing the host table would automatically update the IP address specified here? I may need this in the near future as we are connecting our LAN to others. So far a different address scheme and hopefully stays that way. It seems that everyone has their intra-net as 10.x.x.x Christopher K. Our AS/400 is named Mars, the unix box is Sun, the dial-in box is Moon, etc. Then we use the tables to point where ever we want. Changes in IP number are no longer a major issue. Since you are going to renumber anyway, what an ideal time to make the shift. An example would be "midrange.com" David can take the mailing list anyplace he wants but we'll all still find it without him coming out to our place and fixing our host tables, right?
