• Subject: Speculation: Y2K underground gas tanks

Last spring, Pam and I went through a drive in Northern Nevada. We had a
hairy experience when we found that we had hundreds of miles of desert and
mountains to drive through, and the gas stations we knew to be there were
closed. The reason for the closures was that the owners had not bothered to
modify their underground gas tanks to meet federal guidelines. When the
deadline came up for them to comply, the owners just quit pumping gas,
leaving Pam and me with dry tank in inconvenient circumstances.

It just hit me that there might be a similar situation come this January. We
know that a number of large firms are not going to make the Y2K deadline. We
also know that a vast majority of small firms haven't even put in the effort.
If things turn out badly, what's the alternative? Close the doors, or put the
business up for sale. Damn! I wish I had more liquid assets. January might be
a good time to pick up some real bargains.
