Kirk, I've never been in your shoes and can only comment on #6 Kirk Goins wrote: > I just stepped into the middle of conversion and I need some help. > <<snip>> > > Which brings me to my questions... > <<snip>> > > #6 Is there an advantage to setting up a S36 machine vs just strs36 >environment? > > -- I've never set up a S/36 machine, we've always used the environment. The reason being that we heard some rumor that the only way the OS/400 side gets to the S/36 machine files is through DDM. I really don't know if it's true, I'm sure someone will correct me, but that was enough to convince me not to bother going down that path. We've taken several of our clients from their 536x to their AS/400 and the environment method has worked well for us. BTW, we don't use the strs36 command, we just set up the user profile with a special environment. I also heard that this reduces some overhead. As we took certain job functions to full native, we changed their profile and they never knew the difference. We even wrote our own "D P" and "D J" shortcuts so they could keep on using them in native mode. HTH P.S. As far as the tape save goes, I looked into a UNIX emulation product several years ago, and they provide "comparable" function but not necessarily "compatible" results. :( +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
