Deb,

AFAIK, your choices are fairly limited. I see two options, one of
which doesn't really match your stated requirements:

     1) Program described file with multiple record structures. (Can we
     say RPGII).

     2) Multiple PF files (one PF for each record type) with a
multi-format logical and a record format selector program (if you
are needing to write or update data).

This type of thing is somewhat out of the ordinary now. Probably
the easiest approach is the program described file, but you give up
the ability to use query tools, SQL, etc.

Can someone give me the jest of how to define 1 physical file with variable
record lengths? I'm thinking we use different record formats. An example
or a manual (and we know how hard it is to find something in a manual) would
be nice.

i.e.
this is a header record 23 long
this is a detail record that needs to be 70 long

Your advice is appreciated !
