_I_ remember that!!!  I also remember b---uhh---griping quite loudly on this 
list when IBM changed that policy.  Despite delivering systems that didn't 
perform as promised (940x C's and D's to replace S/36 5363's that didn't even 
perform as well as the replaced systems but were eventually upgraded for free 
by IBM), I _finally_ convinced my customers that "OS Upgrade" and "PTF" 
weren't bad words.  About the day after the last client bought into this, IBM 
introduced the V3 upgrade charges.  All the more reason to get _EVERYTHING_ 
in writing, no matter _who's_ offering it.  I'd bet that a lot of those IBM 
employees trying to form a union now over the pension plan change wish that 
_they_ had...
