Brad:

Haven't a clue about FTP and the like, but I can tell you that the AS/400
can
allow you to key in those special characters in files, at least with a PC
keyboard. Don't know about a dumb terminal (or don't remember - haven't seen
one
for quite a while). I live and work in Toronto, so I don't have all-French
clients, but I think every one of my clients has some French customers
either in
or out of Quebec. I see French customer names and addresses with proper
accents
all the time.

I believe they key them in a couple of ways - the Quebec satellite offices
have
French keyboards and tell Win95 they are using French. In the non-Quebec
offices, they use English keyboards and then key as follows for accents
(excuse
me while I check my cheat sheet): Ctrl `, then the letter for e, Ctrl '
then
the letter for e, Ctrl ^ then the letter for o, Ctrl , don't have any others
handy. I believe these are documented somewhere by Bill Gates and his crowd,
but
can never find where.

That's how they get the accents in the AS/400 files, but what ftp, pc, etc
might
do, I have no idea.

Alright, I knew this would happen, and it did today.

We have an OE system on the PC that folks enter orders on. Then, we take
this data, put it into and EDI format and FTP the file to the AS/400 where
the order is processed and billed.

Well, some of our Canadian Companies (most likely in Quebec) are using
special characters when entering these orders in. When they get to the
AS/400, needless to say they turn into garbage (X'3A' for the most part).

Anyone have any ideas on how this can be solved? Can the AS/400 show
characters such as an "e" with an accent, and if so is there a way to
specify a table when a file is FTP'd to the AS/400?

Thanks.
