Mike,

Microsoft networking runs on TCP/IP as well.  In fact I believe the AS/400
supports only TCP/IP.  You do need the 'Client for Microsoft Networks' installed
to 'see' the NetServer shares.  You will certainly see better performance from
NetServer and the MS Networking support than you will from CA's shared folders. 
 

If you are concerned about people seeing each others drives and printers, don't
load 'File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks' on the PC's.
