We had a similar problem with "large" spool files. The typical reports are <50 pages, after that, the windoze spool manager would not provide feedback to the AS/400 and the 400 would think that the connection was lost. Upon reflection we thought: "Why have two machines provide spooling, when the 400 does it best?" So we set the client machines to disable print manager and have direct to printer output. Not a "magic bullet", just a shop standard. It works.
