Thanks for responding.  Yes, they really are 4300.  Here is the list
of codes:

11-2  917B 3400
12-2  0860 1160
13-2  0000 0010
14-2  0200 FFFF
15-2  917B 0001
16-2  FFFF FFFF
17-2  0000 FFF2
18-2  0000 0000
19-2  38B1 0000

That is if I try a normal IPL.  After posting the message, I tried a
manual IPL and got a A600 5004 which is listed in my startup guide as
a WS controller failure.  This happens shortly into the C6xx 4xxx
series when you would expect the normal manual IPL screen.

Last Dec, Al Barsa posted a partial SRC table.  That shows C5yx xxxx
as "LIC system hardware initialization" and C500 C92B as "Waiting for
console device - error condition only if console not found".  I never
see any C5xx xxxx appear during either a manual or normal IPL.

Watching the normal IPL closer, I realized it never displays the C9xx
xxxx series either.  The most recent SRC displayed prior to the 917B
4300 is C600 4305 (and more than a dozen C6xx 4xxx precede it).  Al's
list of C600 43xx codes ended with C600 4303 for "Temporarily applied
PTFs have reached the static paging phase".  (Which was displayed
prior to the C600 4305.)  

The 6141 is the only WS controller in the machine, and I have never
used one as the system console before.  I *think* I have ProComm
configured OK to use as a 3161 and attached to port 0 of the 6141.  I
 tried various comm settings on a few of the 6141 ports.

To give a little more insight, this is a machine I bought off eBay.
The main intent was to plunder the disk drives, and for what I paid, I
could throw the rest out and still come out OK.  But I figured I might
install a couple of old 6602's I had on the shelf and try and resell
it to lower my costs even more.  I had no guarantee that OS/400 was
even still on the machine.

If it is the 6141 controller which is bad, it can be replaced pretty
cheap.  If there is much more to it, I can just forget it and plunder
the parts.
