This is my first posting on this list, but I just had to say something!

Back in my W-2 days, I found that I really needed to be able to use a PC to
do my job effectively. My employer did not agree. So I bought one. Broke
it, fixed it, packed it with everything I could get my hands on.

Musicians don't say "I'm not going to have a keyboard at home because that
interferes with my family." Costume Designers don't say "I'm not going to
have a drafting table at home, because it interferes with my family."

We are in a creative profession. If we are good at it, we are a form of
artist. Artists need to explore their world outside the boundaries of
"work". My husband and I have handed down our "old" machines to our two
children (3 and 7 - man, can they go!). I had to step over the dolly cradle
to get to my desk. This is what I do and who I am. I don't have separate
work and home personalities. I talk to my kids on the phone at my client
sites and answer client email at 1 in the morning from home with a sleeping
princess on my lap.

It's all of a piece.

These are the same people that sit in the last row next to the door so
they can "sneak out just a few minutes early. This is so boring you
know..."

their employeer pays for it. pays their school, lets them study on the
job, etc, etc. and then when they get the additional training, they
