<Previous Thread> Our customer downloads a monthly order on a NT work station to us, I then FTP it to the AS/400. Once is it on the AS/400 as a flat file, I am attempting to use the file by using substring command to put some of the data into a sorted file. Once I use the substring and move the data into the physical file, it should be there, but.....I m getting the message that the field or indicator is not defined. -------------------------------------------------------------------- <Response> Hi, All I do, all day long is write quick and dirty conversion programs to accomplish this very thing. We have 100+ customers who send me fixed width, comma delimited, and full blown reports. I receive them on disk, via email, and data transfer through ProComm Plus and PC Anywhere. I use Client Access to transfer to the AS/400, although FTP should work just as well. I then break down the file, mine the pertinent data, and move it to an externally described AS/400 file for use on our system. Instead of using the substring command, you might want to consider writing a program to read the file, break it down in an RPG I Spec or COBOL Data Spec, do some error checking, move the data to your sorted file, and send it on its way.
