We just got a new UPS a while back, so I am somewhat
familiar with your questions.

Yes, J14 is a dedicated UPS port.  In the hardware manuals,
somewhere, it is even labeled "UPS".

UPS is a built in OS piece, as long as the UPS is AS/400 aware,
I guess.  I know when I bought my UPS I had to specify it was
for an AS/400.

There are two system values you can set relating to UPSes
and what to do when the power goes down.  QUPSDLYTIM
which can be set to *CALC (let the AS/400 figure it out), *BASIC
(only power on IOP and other cards, etc..), *NOMAX (don't shut
down on power failure) or a number 0-99999 representing seconds
to wait before powering down (if the power doesn't come back up)

The other system value is QUPSMSGQ and is simply the name of
the message queue that receives UPS messages.

Make sure you look at the UPS you get and how many watts it will
support for how long.  We got a very very small UPS that will
only keep up AS/400 up for 10 minutes, basically enough time to shut
it down.  So I set my QUPSDLYTIM to *CALC and the AS/400
calculated it to 45 seconds.  So, after 45 seconds without power, my
AS/400 starts to shut down gracefully.  When the power comes back
up, if all went well, the AS/400 powers itself back up.  Without any
intervention on my part (who likes getting called at 3:00 in the morning
because the power went down and you have to come in to push the
button on the AS/400 then can go home).
