Jim,
    A patent grants you the legal rights to an algorithm, not an 
expression of the algorithm (the program code).  So a patent would 
cover the use of the algorithm in any program language.
    Also, from what I remember, the "look and feel" lawsuits were 
based on copyrights, not patents.
