This could be a solution to your problem:
In the registry entry for the datasource 
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC\ODBC.INI\<datasourcename> for a system 
datasource), add a new string value named "MapLongVCToVarchar", and set the 
data value to "1". According to the documentation, this setting "Indicates 
that longvarchar data types need to be treated as varchars. (VB can not 
handle longvarchars, so they fail if this flag is not set to 1)." Based on 
IBM's description, I'd expect the problem to show up if you exceed 256 
bytes, not 680, but it's easy enough to try...
