I sell used 400's on occasion, and it works like this(or it has
recently)..
A used risc box comes with a OS/400 version that belongs to "that"
box...

In most cases, the boxes I get from IBM(used), they put the most current
version(-1) on the box prior to shipment.. The last two I sold came with
with V4R3 on them.... They will NOT put any LPP's on and you have to do
the normal upgrade procedure for those.... 

I don't have the letter number but on ALL risc boxes, the OS/400 goes
with
the box and can be sold in total to somebody else with no problems...
