Al, >Have you considered the issue that disk drives that are *NEVER turned off >sometimes don't restart. What happens when several thousand customers call >for IBM hardware support (you know, all those guys/gals that they have been >incenting to leave recently) to find out that *NO_ONE is available on New >Years Day. And just in case somebody ignores that (good) advice and has this bite them anyway, the drives can sometimes be coerced to restart by gently tapping on them as they are being started. One 6606 drive I had bought via eBay has this problem. It won't start by itself from a cold start, but will if I tap on it during startup. Then it runs fine as long as it stays powered on. I keep it on a shelf to use in case one of my 6606's in my RAID set goes bad. I'll just substitute the bad spare and coerce it to start, then shop for a real replacement drive then return that drive to the shelf.
