Don you forget two things.  With nearly any GUI set of solutions you are 
always just a few days from completion but never actually there, and 
delivery to the end users is a whole new career path for someone.

"Always just a few days from completion but never actually there".  Hmm, doesn't
sound any different from any other weakly managed programming project.  Maybe
I'm just jaded.

Deployment of distributed applications is certainly an adventure.  There are
people who know how to do it well, but they're still a bit rare (of course, so
is common sense, but when has that ever stopped anyone? - grin).  I assert,
though, that it's the distributed application that's the issue, not the GUI per
se.
