Irene,

One of many ways to see if the AS/400 is up is to try a call to the
dataqueue interface.  Another idea would be to try and start an FTP
session, although the AS/400 could be there and the FTP server might be
down in that case.  Check the System API reference, there may be some API's
you could use.

In order to get files to/from the AS/400, why not just move the data onto
the IFS and mount the NT server onto the AS/400 IFS.  That way the data is
all on the AS/400 with its security, back up/recovery, etc. and the NT
applictation can continue to use it.  Any AS/400 application program can
read/write to both DB/2 and the IFS so you can build the backend any way
you would like.  There is a good redbook on the IFS mounting techniques.

You can call API's to check the user profile and password.  There is a
security API manual on the old softcopy CD.
