The method I've heard of and use periodically, is to DSPOBJD QCMD *PGM,
display service attributes to see the System Level.

Not any more.  Since V4R1, the compilers don't ship a new
version with every operating system release.  For example, if
you compile a program in V4R3, chances are it will say V4R2M0
in the release at the top of the listing (CL is one exception).
