You do not, necessarily, have to be out of the S/36 environment. There is an
attribute of the S/36 environment which allows changes to be made while the
environment is active.

Allow CHGS36 while active . . . . . . :   Y

Having said that, I, too, agree with using the AS/400 commands.

  You can correct the P1, P2, etc mappings with the CHGS36 command. All
users
must be out of the S/36 environment.

  I do agree with using the As/400 commands however.
