David, The door does swing down, hinges are on the bottom, and the door does stick out a little if left open. Might want to position the machine so no one knocks the door off walking by. As Pat said: You really need to get a copy of manual for common operations... or get on the web and goto online books and find the manual As/400 Basic Operations & Administration which has diagrams for all control panels including the model 500....
