RE: email API... to and CC:the same..

Maybe we're arguing semantics. By copies of messages I'm talking about
actual data copies that float around. In this situation the target
server DOESN'T decide which messages are duplicates. Usually it will
only get a single copy of the message from the client with multiple
receipt-to addresses. In this case it will usually only forward a single
copy of the message onto each domain with the relevant receipt-to
addresses for that domain. It doesn't have to do this either - it could
send multiple copies.  If it gets multiple copies from the client it
will forward multiple copies. When the target server gets a single
message with multiple receipt-to addresses it can recognise duplicates
in these addresses and then only make a single copy into that mailbox.
If however the original client or one of the relaying SMTP servers
decided to send a message copy to each of the receipt-to addresses then
the target server will put multiple copies into the relevant mailbox. My
point being is that the target SMTP server does not know enough about
the message to decide if multiple message copies actually represent the
same message.
