Stan,

I don't know about the HP 4050, but the IBM 4317 has a power saver option 
on the printer configuration menu. It sounds like this might be your 
problem for 4317.   Default is for the printer to go into "sleep" mode 
after 30 minutes, after which it has to warm up before it will print 
again.  You can change PWRSAV setting in the Config Menu from the default 
30 minutes to 15Min, 1HR, 2Hr, 3Hr, 4HR or OFF.  Only drawback that I see 
to increasing the PWRSAV time is you use more energy and the fans run 
longer.  If the delay bothers you, I would change it.
