How are you "getting to" the modem? STRITF?
A typical async connexion is made with an automatic dial, rather than
manual. When I hear "manual" I think of the old 502 phone sets with the
"talk/data" button, but I remember them as being attached to synchronous
modems...

My async comms programs follow a script somewhat like this:
acquire the device
send ATZ (wake up the modem)
read "OK"
send initialisation string (AT&C1&D2 maybe)
read "OK"
send ATDT5551212 (dial the far end)
read "CONNECT xxx" and other modem responses
start conversation with far end
...
end conversation with far end
pause 2 seconds
send +++ (enter command mode)
pause 2 seconds
send ATH (hang up)
release device

Hope this helps!
