Hi Todd, thanks for that . . . you've provided me with another avenue to investigate; this problem is (for me) escalating out of all proportion to it's potential benefit - but I just don't like being beaten, most particularly by a computer, even if it is an AS/400! Using a break-handling program is, I now feel fairly sure a blind-alley; I just can't believe it is so difficult (impossible ?) to get an AS/400 to auto-initialise tapes (any tapes, new, old ...) during a save operation and to retain control of owner-id and vol-id. If I get a solution to this, I'll publish it here on Midrange-L .
