funny you should ask.
I just wrote one last week.

I assume by ping check, you mean a program that monitors
an interface and reports when it goes down.

When you do the Ping set MSGMODE to *ESCAPE then monitor
for TCP3210. I also set my MSGMODE to *QUIET to keep the joblog
smaller. You should also be able reduce the packet size to 56 bytes
and the number of packets to something less than the default 5 to
minimize network impact.

The one I wrote is meant to monitor a remote router interface
and dials up a PPP line when it detects a failure.

This week I'm going to add in the dialup disconnect when the
interface comes back up.

I started to do this but of course instantly ran up against the fact
that this information is written to the "job log" and haven't started
digging into how to get at that with the lack of an output parameter on
the PING command...
