From experience, in the UK, when we write the date in figure format aa/bb/cc, the person to whom we are writing will either know the format or we are considerate enough to bear in mind where they are to make it obvious to them what WE mean by the date. Perhaps we are more sub-consciously aware that there are other countries outside our national borders who may wish to write/spell differently. We also manage without machines to cast and count our votes - we use the old fashioned method of "writing" and then counting by hand.
