This is the old basic research question.  If you learn enough stuff,
eventually you find a practical application for it.  Any company that can't
see the value of AS/400 specific training in an AS/400 (or whatever it's
called) shop is, to put it kindly, a bit short sighted.

I know what I learned at Common last spring and applied to things that came
up later in the year has already paid for the entire cost of the trip
several times over.  My employer is way ahead on the deal.
