Charly,

 If the 2617 is not connected to a Hub via the 10bt-AUI transciever (or
to another system via a cross-over cable) it'll fail the vary on. The
message won't neccesarily be correct in that situation but the one you
list could show up.

 Someone else posted that you'll get a 10M Half duplex line by default.
Unfortunately that's the best you can hope for with this card.

 An Ethernet Cross over cable is pinned:

 1- Tx+ <--> Rx+ -3             Rx= Recieve
 2- Tx- <--> Rx- -6             Tx= Transmit
 3- Rx+ <--> Tx+ -1
 6- Rx- <--> Tx- -2

If you hold the connectod so that the gold contacts are on top and
pointing away from you (the retaining tab will then be on the bottom
pointing back toward you) then Pin 1 is on the left, pin 8 on the right.

 Hope this helps.

  - Larry
